The An'ei era

Hello everyone ;)

Today I’d like to introduce this artwork named “The An’ei era” in ASHMOLEAN

It was made Toyoharu Chikanobu (1838-1912).
He was prolific woodblock artist of Japan’s Meiji period.

This is traditional Japanese print.
The long time ago, everyone preferred to this type of face like Asian beauty.
she has beautiful white face and black hair.

The woman is this print looks into one mirror, but she uses another so that she can check the back of her elaborate hairstyle.

The An’ei era Japanese mirrors were made of polished bronze, not glass.

And the scene above shows a traditional mirror-polisher.

She wears the beautiful kimono that traditional Japanese cloth.
We can see on the collar of the beauty’s inner robe.

I could know a lot of information from this print, for example how to make mirror and mirror’s materials.

This type of picture has series; Mirror of the Ages (Jidai Kagami)
I also checked this one.
